Inside the atelier in Ubrique

Forty-two people, one floor, 118 steps per bag. What actually happens between a hide and a box, and why the town matters.

Ubrique has been tanning and cutting leather since the eighteenth century. The workshop we work with has forty-two people, and eleven of them have been there longer than we have been a brand.

Every bag passes through 118 recorded steps. The one that matters most is the edge finish: four coats of paint, sanded between each, which is why the edge looks like a line and not a seam.

We visit four times a year. Not to audit: to sit with the people who tell us which of our ideas will not survive a decade.
