Cabin allowances are inconsistent and regional jets are smaller than they look. How to choose a bag that boards every time.

A 42 cm weekender takes two days of clothes, a pair of shoes in the side compartment, a laptop up to 14 inches and a wash bag. That is the honest list.
The mistake is packing it to the zip. Loading a soft bag to capacity turns it into a box, and a box is what your shoulder remembers at the end of the day.
Pack to two thirds, keep the heavy items against the flat back panel, and leave the front pocket for what you need at the gate.
