Full-grain, top grain, corrected grain, split, bonded. What the words mean, how to tell them apart in ten seconds, and why it changes how a bag ages.

A hide has three layers. Full-grain means we keep the top one, where the fibres are dense and the surface is the animal itself. Sanding it away produces a uniform look and a surface that cannot be repaired.
We tan in Tuscany with chestnut and quebracho extracts. It takes thirty days instead of two, and the leather comes out stiffer, which is what a bag that holds its shape needs.
The payoff is time. A vegetable-tanned bag darkens where your hand rests and scuffs into a patina instead of cracking. It is not maintenance free, and that is the point.
